Have you ever just had the urge to be good at something that you are simply horrible at? Well, for me that is baking. I cannot bake, like, at all. I am nervous every time I come to try it, it is an art, and I am not an artist. I am too heavy handed and blasé about it all. So, this is it, I am determined to get this. By the end of the year I will be able to have at least one dish that I can bake well consistently.
So I am starting a review process. Every time I bake, I will photograph it, taste it, review it and correct my mistakes. Here are my notes.
The Attempt: Jam Tarts

Recipe: https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/valentines-day-jam-tarts
Did I follow the recipe: Yes I did…ok I cooked them for longer
Texture: They were quite good
Decoration: definitely needs fine tuning
Taste: they were ok
Notes:
Jam tarts hold a place in my heart because they are the first thing I remember my mum trying to bake with me. I pushed the boat out and made my own pastry, however I put too much jam to pastry and it ruined the presentation and a little bit of the taste. I think with a few tweaks I could perfect this one. The goodness is that my pastry worked! I hate working with pastry, be it ready rolled or homemade it is something that I have never been able to get right, but I did. This tells me that I must be improving, even if it’s only a little! Next time, less jam and cook on a lower heat.
Until next time.

I think jam tarts are meant to be messy, they’re the taste of childhood for me too. Mum and I used to make jam tarts with leftover pastry when she’d been baking a pie. 😊
