Have you ever just had the urge to be good at something that you are simply horrible at? Well, for me that is baking. I cannot bake, like, at all. I am nervous every time I come to try it, it is an art, and I am not an artist. I am too heavy handed and blasé about it all. So, this is it, I am determined to get this. By the end of the year I will be able to have at least one dish that I can bake well consistently.
So I am starting a review process. Every time I bake, I will photograph it, taste it, review it and correct my mistakes. Here are my notes.
The Attempt: Oat and Cranberry Flapjack

Recipe: I used a recipe that a friend gave me. Sorry a closely guarded secret.
Did I follow the recipe: Yes… although I did use the wrong oats
Texture: let’s say crumbly
Decoration: it looked good when it came out of the oven
Taste: it did taste like a flapjack
Notes: As you can see from the picture above my flapjack did not hold together. I used the wrong oats and it was a disaster, the whole thing unfortunately went in the bin (to Jon’s dismay). I am not really a fan of flapjacks but this recipe is foolproof… that is, if you actually follow the instructions. It was passed down by a good friend who makes sublime flapjacks and I thought that I could do no wrong… although what I did might have made a good granola? You win some, you lose some, just don’t use jumbo oats next time!
If you have any suggestions as to what I should bake next please leave them in the comments below.
Until next time.
